History and Ownership
The Friedmutter Group heads the design team of the Cosmopolitan as the chief architect, while Arquitectonica is the design architect of the themed exterior of the building. DeSimone Consulting Engineers are the engineers of the building. There is a big team of interior designers including the Friedmutter Group, Prophet, Jeffrey Beers, the Rockwell Group, Bentel & Bentel and Adam Tihany.
The site of the resort was originally a parking lot meant for midrise timeshare building, the Jockey Club in its close vicinity. As per the original plan, the casino was to come up on the second floor, but this later changed, and the casino came up at ground level. Likewise, the owners abandoned plans for condominium units and built hotel rooms and studios instead.
During 2010, the authorities announced that the hotel shall open in stages, starting from December 2010 and finishing in July of 2011. During 2010, this was the lone hotel-casino opened on the Strip. Finally, it formally opened on 15th December 2010 as a division of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, a group of autonomous hotels having right to use for Marriott’s huge system of rewards and reservation. They have a partnership with the Ritz-Carlton, which is their first foray into the Las Vegas Strip and only their second property in the area.
